“He must become greater; I must become less.” - John 3:30 NIV

As Jesus was coming on to the scene and began baptizing folks, John the Baptist was questioned. The man questioning in such a way that it was if he was trying to make John the Baptist jealous or angry, “Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan - the one you testified about - well, he is baptizing and everyone is going to him.”

John showed no anger. No displeasure. In fact, he became to testify about Jesus again. And in the middle of that testimony, he clearly and succinctly states...

“He must become greater; I must become less.”

Sometimes we all struggle with ego issues and/or confidence issues. Sometimes we are given a big blow to the ego. A promotion falls through, a job goes away, or somehow in some way we feel disrespected or dishonored. And our confidence wains and our ego is bruised.

“He must become greater; I must become less.”

Sometimes, we get that promotion. We rise into powerful position. We have the honor and respect of our peers and our boss. Our confidence rises and our abilities are seen and noticed, and our ego is fed.

“He must become greater; I must become less.”

And sometimes, we have to remember that it’s not all about us. We have been put into places and positions for a purpose, for a reason. We are where we are to bring glory and honor to God. We are where we are, as John the Baptist exemplifies, to help others see and know Jesus through who we are, what we do, how we act, and how we respond. Our job, first and foremost, is to turn the focus from ourselves and on to the Son of the Living God, the Bridegroom... Jesus.

“He must become greater; I must become less.”
