Mind's Eye
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” - Colossians 1:13-14 NIV
I’m no artist. I don’t even pretend to be. But sometimes I find myself thinking like one. Seeing the bold colors. Imagining, even envisioning what it would look like on canvas. And usually, that’s where it stops.
Every time I read today’s passage a vision of a painting comes to mind. Once again this morning, I was reminded of this passage, and the painting in my mind vividly returned.
The white canvas covered in dark black paint, with faint almost invisible streaks of gold intermingled throughout the blackness almost making the darkness seem more rich, more deep, more full.
Then, in the midst of this blackness, this darkness, a smattering of brilliant white that almost explodes off the page. A whiteness so contrasting with the blackness that its as if the darkness is trying to escape the light. The whiteness softly, faintly fading into the darkness the further away that it is from the white.
Red. Then comes the deep, dark red. Dripping onto the page. The drops streaking down the darkness. Each drop resting intermittently at different places as it spills and splatters. The red almost surrounding the whiteness, as it seems to escape, or rather, disseminate from the illuminating white.
The rich darkness disappearing in the mind’s eye, as the blood red drops and emboldened white encapsulate the essence of the true light, the light that has come into the world.
