Come On... Do Something!
In honor of the 27th Anniversary of the Old Lazy Dog blog, I’m sharing another one of my past favorites. Keep the Faith ~ Marty
Come On... Do Something!
(Today’s Old Lazy Dog Blog)
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV
In my three year high school career (back then high school was just 10-12th grade), my dad never missed one of my basketball games. And though I never really looked, I always knew he was there by his familiar whistle or a one or two word comment (like “alright” or “let’s go”) that I could somehow hear over the Kentucky high school basketball crowds. It was funny, the only thing that I could usually hear during most of those games was my coach, my mom (she was by far our most vocal supporter), and my dad - no matter how large and loud the crowd.
I remember during one particular basketball game, I was not necessarily having my best or most energetic game and I guess my dad had seen enough.
“C’mon Stubblefield... Do Something!”
His voice seemingly booming above the crowd. His words were piercing. His words doing the trick to light a fire in my game (if not anger in my head). Causing me to offensively and defensively step up my game that ultimately helped my team come back and win.
We never talked about it. He had done his job. Helping me to do mine.
This next week, we’re going to talk about putting our faith to work. Starting with today.
As we begin to hear and answer God’s call to action to “Do Something”, we have to remember that God’s grace and forgiveness are a free gift and not given to us just because we are trying to do good things. His grace and forgiveness aren’t earned. They were given to us on the cross - through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
We do because He first did for us.
As an outpouring of our love for Him, we put our faith to work
Like my Dad’s voice out of the stands, God calls each of us to “Do Something.” It may be a short term mission project. It may be to be a pastor or a missionary. It may be to start a ministry, feed a hungry family, take care of orphans and widows, sponsor a child, speak a kind word to someone who is hurting, to share your faith with the lost, or give your time to kids, being there...
Whatever it may be that God lays on your heart, just do it.
As a Believer and Follower of Jesus, it’s time for us to bravely and boldly put our faith to work, time for us to step out of the darkness and shine God’s light, time for us to overcome our fears and weaknesses.
Look around you. Where is God at work?
Look around you. See what needs to be done.
“Come on... Do Something!”
