Questioned
“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.””
- Matthew 22:34-40 NIV
For the rest of this week, let’s try to focus on this passage... especially on Jesus’ reply to the question that the Pharisees asked to test Him… even trap Him.
As Believers... as Followers of Jesus, we can be asked similar questions.
Maybe not so directly, but we are asked through work environments, life situations, choices we have to make and our replies and responses to those choices and in those environments and situations.
It may not be “Which is the greatest commandment,” but it may be “Let’s see what is most important to you.” Or, “How are you going to handle this issue or that situation?”
Where does Jesus fit into my response?
Where does the love for others come into play?
In what order do I live out Jesus’ response?
And what about me... where do “I” fit in?
Let’s look at Jesus’ response again…
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (all that we are) and love your neighbor as yourself.
Looks to me like I am third...
