Delight
Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.” ~ Psalm 37:1-4 NIV
I’ve been pondering this passage for a few days:
What does it mean to delight in the Lord?
And my first thought/response was, “Gosh, I don’t really know…” And I tried to wash the thought from my mind.
But the thought remained. The question remained. So I began to pray and think it through a bit
“So… what do I delight in?”
And these things came to mind: My wife, my kids, my grandsons, my dogs, my friends, basketball, seeing a child/player/person grasp a new concept and take it and begin to excel in it.
“Why does all that delight you?”
They make me happy… but even more than that, they make me joy-filled and joyful.
I delight in them because I know them.
Because I see and know who they are and what God has made them to be (even though I may not yet know what He wants them to be and do).
I have hopes, dreams, desires and expectations for them, as they have for me.
I delight in them because they have become a part of me.
I delight in them for the big things and the little things.
I delight in them because I love them.
That’s how the Lord wants us to delight in Him.
To delight in Him in such a way that He is first and foremost...
He is all those reasons, and then some.
Love the Lord in such fullness (with all of our heart, souls mind and strength) that we can't help but to delight in Him.
“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
~ Philippians 2:9-11 NIV
